Brief CV

He earned a PhD in Linguistics from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (1992) with a dissertation entitled Aspectos de la estructura de la cláusula: Transitividad y complementación preposicional en español. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Philology from the same university in 1982, where he also defended his bachelor’s thesis: A propósito de la transitividad y la diátesis: las construcciones pronominales con verbos transitivos (1983).

His research has focused on the study of grammatical relations, verbal valency, and diathesis alternations. He has approached these topics from both an intralinguistic, corpus-based perspective, and a typological perspective, which considers interlinguistic variation and the general principles underlying similarities and differences among languages.

His publications include the monographs Transitividad y complementación preposicional en español (1995) and Las relaciones gramaticales entre predicado y participantes (1995). He has also published articles and book chapters on the structure and meaning of clausal constructions, verbal valency, syntactic and semantic functions, clitic pronouns, middle voice, and diathesis alternations, among others.

Between 2002 and 2012, he coordinated several research projects exploring the integration of verbal meaning into alternative constructional patterns using a corpus-based empirical approach. These projects resulted in a database of verbs, diathesis alternations, and syntactic-semantic patterns of Spanish called ADESSE (http://adesse.uvigo.es). This database records, within a corpus, the constructional alternations of each verbal meaning and each semantic class of verbs.

More recently, his research has also focused on sign languages, leading to the co-direction with Carmen Cabeza of two projects (RADIS and RADIS+) on syntactic structures in the Spanish sign language (LSE). These projects involve the compilation and annotation of a linguistic corpus in LSE. The annotation follows a system of identificatory glosses that link lexical expressions with their lemmas. A further level of annotation captures morphosyntactic characteristics of expressions and links each predicate to its argument structure. One of the outcomes is the creation of a web repository that provides access to part of the annotated corpus for those interested in LSE: https://isignos.uvigo.gal/en/.
