Welcome to the Translation and Linguistics Department
The Department of Translation and Linguistics at the Universidade de Vigo was founded in 2001. It brings together the areas of General Linguistics and Translation and Interpreting. The synergies between these two areas are essential for effective understanding and communication in a globalised world. In the area of General Linguistics, language is studied scientifically in all its dimensions, including sign language. Meanwhile, the field of Translation and Interpreting, explores the different ways of building linguistic and cultural bridges in four foreign languages and in the two co-official languages of Galicia in a variety of formats: written, oral, audiovisual, technological, etc., with an emphasis on both translation and interpreting.
The department’s research groups develop different research lines, participate in teaching innovation initiatives, and take part in projects with a social dimension that can be consulted in the pertinent section. All of this demonstrates a sound commitment to excellence. Through continuous training and its application in the classroom, we aim for high-quality teaching in line with the latest didactic and pedagogical advances.
The professors teach on bachelor’s degree programmes (Translation and Interpreting, Galician and Spanish Applied Philology, and Foreign Languages), master’s degrees (Applied Linguistics [MILA], Tradución Multimedia [MTM], and Translation for International Communication [MTCI]), PhDs (Comunicación [communication], Estudos Lingüísticos [linguistic studies], and Tradución e Paratradución [translation and paratranslation]), and non-official degrees (Especialista en Tradución para a Industria
do Videoxogo [ETIV], and Experto en Interpretación Simultánea Profesional). They are also involved in research in the areas of Translation, Interpreting, and Linguistics, as well as in the transfer of knowledge to society.
The MTCI is a master’s degree awarded with the recognition of excellence by the Xunta de Galicia, and is part of the prestigious European Master’s in Translation network of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation. According to the report Inserción laboral das persoas tituladas da UVigo en estudos de mestrado, the MTM stands out as one of the master’s degrees with the highest graduate employment rate (85.7%) and one of the lowest unemployment rates among graduates (12.5%). In addition, the report Informe de satisfacción das persoas tituladas shows that MILA and MTM achieve the best results among Arts and Humanities master’s degrees in terms of graduates’ satisfaction with the training received and the extent to which the master’s degrees met their expectations.
The department’s commitment to excellence in professional and scientific training is reflected in its participation in more than 214 research projects, the publication of more than 884 papers by its members, the supervision of more than 44 theses, and the awarding of more than 50 collaboration grants to its students.
In technical matters, the department is a key interlocutor for the Xunta de Galicia, and the provincial and local councils in drafting decrees, examinationcalls, job announcements, etc. This department maintains an ongoing collaboration with elementary, secondary, and baccalaureate schools (STEMbach projects), cultural associations, and various NGOs through student collaboration with organisations Doctors of the World, Red Cross and Providencia via a range of activities (talks, lectures, round tables, etc.). Its members also take part in various committees of the Asociación Española de Normalización y Certificación (AENOR) and the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA). The collaboration with the Centro de Normalización Lingüística de Lengua de Signos Española (CNLSE) should be mentioned in the areas of research and dissemination of sign language.
The report of Inserción laboral das persoas tituladas da UVigo en estudos de grao provides key information about all our degree programmes. With regard to the Translation and Interpreting degree, 60% of graduates study a master’s degree, the unemployment rate is 5%, and 10% prepare for civil service examinations.
