Presentation of AETER
The Spanish association of terminology, AETER, was founded in 1997 in Madrid on the initiative of people and institutions interested in the study of terminology and specialised languages, as well as in the development and consultation of terminological resources in Spanish alongside the other languages of Spain.
AETER is a national non-profit association. Its main objectives are to develop and promote terminology as a discipline and to encourage the creation of necessary terminological resources and the dissemination of existing resources.
Members and Affiliation
AETER’s statutes povide for membership as either individual or institutional members. Membership entitles individuals to attend the assotiation’s annual conferences free of charge, and to take part in its projects. Registration is completed by filling out a registration form and paying the membership fee.
Among its members are institutions such as the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales and the Real Academia Española; several departments and secondary schools from various universities; the Asociación Española de Normalización y Certificación (AENOR); terminology centres for other languages of Spain (TERMCAT, UZEI, and TERMIGAL) as well as several private entities in the language industry and publishing sector.
The Department of Translation and Linguistics at the Universidade de Vigo has been a member of this association since 2018 and is represented by the terminology professor in the Bachelor’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting (Iolanda Galanes Santos).
Activity
AETER regularly organises terminology conferences with the aim of facilitating scientific exchange and raising awareness among institutions that produce and consume terminology about its importance in communication and dissemination in specialised areas. These conferences address terminology from theoretical, practical and applies perspectives. The association also participates in meetings, conferences, and other activities connected to terminology and related fields.
AETER maintains relationships with regional, national, and international entities, associations, and organisations in order to promote coordination in the use of specialised languages. t is part of the terminology networks: Red Iberoamericana de Terminología (RITerm) and Red Panlatina de Terminología (REALITER). Additionally, it maintains a reciprocal membership with the association of terminology Societat Catalana de Terminologia (SCATERM).
It also participates in the Comité 191 UNE of AENOR, where it serves as a secretary. It is currently working with other entities on the expansion of the TERMINESP project. This aims to create a system for extracting and validating terminological data using artificial intelligence, as well as a metasearch engine for terminology across various public and private corpora.
